Golden Bear Golf Club
at Indigo Run
This 18-hole course, which opened in 1992, is a challenging test of expertise and was expertly designed by Jack Nicklaus’ design team. It's the perfect place to experience Hilton Head Island golf.
The Golden Bear Golf Club has nice length - at 7,014 yards, it's neither short nor overly long. Its conditioning is good, with all the little details Jack Nicklaus courses usually have for its players, including wide fairways. It's also an ideal course for those unfamiliar with it -- like vacationers to Hilton Head SC because there are hole diagrams and descriptions on the markers. There are also even more detailed descriptions on the ParView GPS systems in the carts, which has extremely clear hole replications.
It's a flat course, with very little water, but Nicklaus' design team did a good job of lending variety to the holes. The sixth hole is the toughest on the front nine, a par 4 with a lagoon running down the length of the right side and a narrow fairway. And watch out for No. 3, a dogleg right where you can run out of fairway fast, and into unseen water. So if you're looking to experience some Hilton Head Island golf, head over to Golden Bear Golf Club.
